Resurgam 50
In his address at the Reconsecration of St Andrew’s Church on 30th November 1957, sixteen years after the destruction wrought by bombs on the night of 22 March 1941, The Rt. Revd Dr R.C. Mortimer, then Bishop of Exeter, described St Andrew’s as, “the pride and glory of the diocese and one of the great parish churches of England. It is the natural centre and focus of the religious life of Plymouth.”The inscription RESURGAM - “I will rise again” - carved in granite over the North door, the main entrance to the church, is a reminder of the dark hours from which St Andrew’s Church rose again. It has come to symbolise the forward looking hope at the centre of the Christian faith – that in God’s good time all who believe in him will rise again.
St Andrew’s Church has been at the heart of life in Plymouth for 1200 years. Now, through Resurgam 50, we aim to promote and extend that position, ensuring that spirituality and sound scriptural teaching remain at the centre of all that we do, and making St Andrew’s a 21st century centre of excellence in Care, Arts, Learning and Heritage. In this way we hope to bring into the church many who would not otherwise choose to enter, and thus create opportunities to open blind eyes and deaf ears.
