Become a Friend of St. Andrew’s
There has been a church on this site for about twelve hundred years, the building growing to its present shape between 1370 and 1486. In the Blitz of 1941 the church was left a roofless shell, but the next morning a board bearing the word ‘Resurgam’ (I will rise again) appeared over the north door. In 1957, restored, redesigned internally, but still essentially the church created in 1490, the church was reconsecrated, and today the splendid John Piper windows add light and colour to the ancient stonework.
Over the centuries St. Andrew’s has played a full part in the life of the city of Plymouth. Many distinguished citizens are buried here and commemorated in tablets around the walls. Catherine of Aragon came to this church to pray on her arrival in England. Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins attended as parishioners and mayors of the city. The baptism of Captain Bligh of the Bounty and the funeral of Sir Francis Chichester were held here.
Today, St Andrew’s continues as an active parish church proclaiming the Christian faith at the heart of the city, and we are grateful for all who join with us in helping to support this great heritage.
The Friends of St. Andrew’s
The Friends of St. Andrew’s was founded in 1997, the fortieth anniversary of the restoration of the church, in order to help with the preservation, maintenance and improvement of the fabric of the church, and to encourage interest in the precincts and history of St. Andrew’s.
